Wine for home consumption
In El Puesto, the Oviedo family still makes traditional foot-trodden wine with techniques passed down through generations.
There are still small producers who make wine every year for their own consumption. Our student David Morales talked with one of them in El Puesto, Tinogasta. These small producers are usually informal, that is, not registered with the INV, so their products are not regulated, since they are for their own use.
In search of traditional foot-trodden wine:
In El Puesto, 20 kilometres north of the town of Tinogasta, foot-trodden wine ("vino patero") is still made with age-old techniques handed down from generation to generation, as in the Oviedo family. This winemaking tradition was started by Don Santos Oviedo, working with the classic Criolla grapes of the department (Cereza and Torrontés), which give wines with little colour intensity and the characteristic sweetness of vino patero.
Today his children, nephews, nieces and grandchildren carry on the tradition.
At our students' initiative, we offer these small producers training so they can improve what they make, and if they decide to grow, we can help them register with the INV. We also offer them our wine analysis service, so they can better control the quality and safety of their wines.
We value this initiative. Congratulations to our students!
